Geographical Indications or GIs are signs that designate the origins of goods from a particular geographical location. Generally, GIs are obtained for agricultural products, food stuffs, wine, spirits, artisanal products, handicrafts, and so on. Some famous examples are the Darjeeling Tea, Banaras Saree, Champagne, and several others.
India is one among a short list of countries, that has GIs in abundance. Accordingly, to regulate GIs India introduced a special legislation viz. the under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
