Geographical Indications

Geographical Indications or GIs are signs that designate the origins of goods from a particular geographical location. Generally, GIs are obtained for agricultural products, food stuffs, wine, spirits, artisanal products, handicrafts, and so on. Some famous examples are the Darjeeling Tea, Banaras Saree, Champagne, and several others.

India is one among a short list of countries, that has GIs in abundance. Accordingly, to regulate GIs India introduced a special legislation viz. the under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Our attorneys have advised producers and associations in the preparation and filing of applications for registration of GIs, prosecution and registration of GI applications, and enforcement or litigation of GIs before the Courts.
